2010: SkyTeam expanding fast
Friday 5, November 2010
On Thursday, November 4 in Paris, the Governing Board meeting was held for SkyTeam, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2010. The alliance has had a busy year and has been constantly expanding.
Over the past ten years the number of member airlines has more than tripled and the number of flights and destinations offered by the alliance has doubled to provide customers worldwide with even more connections.
Today, SkyTeam is the second largest alliance in the world with a global network built around modern and efficient hubs in Europe, the USA, Asia and Africa. Thanks to this global network that links the complementary networks of all member airlines, each airline can improve its network of destinations. With the development of the alliance, customers can also benefit from coordinated loyalty programs, even more destinations and frequencies, as well as lower fares.
In 2010, the development of the alliance has accelerated with the arrival of new members - Vietnam Airlines and Tarom - and the announcement that China Eastern, China Airlines and Shanghai Airlines will be joining SkyTeam in 2011. Together with China Southern, already a member of SkyTeam, these four airlines will enable the alliance to consolidate its leading position in the Greater China region.
An agreement is about to be signed between SkyTeam and Aerolineas Argentinas, which will give the alliance a foothold in South America, a region where the alliance is not yet present. Aerolineas Argentinas is expected to join SkyTeam in 2012 and will be the first South American airline in the alliance.
SkyTeam's ambition is to continue its development, focusing primarily on quality. SkyTeam seeks to recruit airlines with complementary networks to increase the offer of destinations to customers. Latin America, India, South East Asia and Asia-Pacific are the regions where the alliance is seeking to strengthen its network.
The aim of the alliance is to continually improve products, connections and develop consistent "seamless service".
The strengthened cooperation between the alliance partners is another area of development. With their extensive experience in mergers and joint ventures, the SkyTeam member airlines have been able to establish strong links in terms of confidence and cooperation.
