Bad weather impacted on operational conditions at most UK airports

In the first quarter of 2010 there were 304 thousand scheduled flights and 18 thousand charter flights at the ten UK airports monitored, which represents a decline of six and eleven per cent respectively, compared with the first quarter of 2009. In January 2010, bad weather impacted on operational conditions at most UK airports, generating cancellations and delays.

Scheduled Flights

During January to March 2010, the overall on-time performance (defined as early to 15 minutes late) of scheduled flights at the ten UK airports monitored by the CAA was 74 per cent, seven percentage points lower than in the first quarter of 2009. Average delay, at 17 minutes, increased by five minutes between the first quarter of 2009 and the same period in 2010. Punctuality worsened noticeably during January, with London and regional airports’ on-time performance falling by ten and fourteen percentage points respectively compared to January 2009.

Heathrow’s scheduled on-time performance fell by six percentage points in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the first quarter of 2009 and average delay increased by four minutes to 16 minutes. Gatwick and Luton’s on-time performance fell by eleven percentage points, and Stansted’s fell by five percentage points. London City achieved an on-time performance of 75 per cent, which was nine percentage points lower than in the first three months of 2009.

Overall, on-time performance for scheduled flights at regional airports fell by eight percentage points and average delay increased by six minutes in the first quarter of 2010 compared with the same period in 2009. The largest decline in on-time performance (ten percentage points) and increase in average delay (eight minutes) amongst the regional airports was seen at Birmingham.

Charter Flights

The proportion of on-time charter flights fell by six percentage points in the first quarter of 2010 to 62 per cent, compared with 68 per cent in the same period the year before. The average delay across all charter flights monitored in the fist quarter of 2010 was 35 minutes, twelve minutes more than in the first quarter of 2009.

In the first quarter of 2010, overall punctuality for charter flights at the five regional airports monitored decreased more than at the London airports. On-time performance of charter flights at the London airports fell by five percentage points to 61 per cent, whereas, at the regional airports, on-time performance fell by eight percentage points to 63 per cent. Charter services were also particularly affected in January 2010, with on-time performance, at the five regional airports monitored falling to 54 per cent, eleven percentage points lower than in January 2009, and on-time performance at London airports falling by eight percentage points to 50 per cent.

Destinations with most passengers

Among the 75 scheduled and charter destinations with the most passengers in the first three months of 2010, flights to and from the Isle of Man had the highest on-time performance (87 per cent) and the shortest average delay (eight minutes). Scheduled flights to and from Istanbul recorded the worst on-time performance of 43 per cent and flights to and from Toronto had the highest average delay of 39 minutes.
