Things to do in Basel

Christmas market

BASEL - EUROPE'S CHRISTMAS CITY

Basel, located in the threecountries corner of Switzerland, France and Germany, is the centre of one of Europe’s most exciting Christmas regions. In November of each year, the cosmopolitan city on the Rhine surpasses itself in the scale and attractiveness of its preparations for the coming Advent period. Basel attaches special importance to Advent as a prelude to Christmas, a fact that is manifested in a variety of ways. Basel has a deep-rooted tradition as Switzerland’s most beautiful and largest Christmas city, and is well worth a visit every year. Other centres of the European Christmas tradition are only around an hour’s drive away. The Christmas markets of Strasbourg, Colmar, Freiburg, etc. are easy to reach and make Basel the ideal starting point for a European Christmas adventure.

Basel Christmas Market, the largest and most traditional one in Switzerland

In the heart of the historic Old Town at Barfüsserplatz, you will find the attractive Christmas market with a very special charm of its own. In no less than 150 stands and wooden huts, traders and practitioners of arts and crafts from all over Switzerland and the Basel region offer their goods and give a demonstration of their skills. The festive atmosphere is heightened by a unique concentration of pre-Christmas delights for the eyes, ears, nose and tastebuds. The goods on sale at the Basel Christmas market could hardly be more diverse: hats, minerals and fossils, Christmas tree ornaments from every conceivable place, linen, pewter, glass glitter balls, wooden figures, folk art from the Erzgebirge in Germany, pottery, mirror prisms, spices, wooden toys, children’s clothes, scented woods – to name only some of the products on sale.

Basel in a Christmas mood

Not only the well-preserved Old Town is radiant in the warm Christmas light, but the shops and the facades of many buildings glitter with a golden glow. Roughly a hundred tall pine trees border the streets and stand like brightly lit sentinels pointing the way for the visitor.

Seven reasons to visit Basel during Christmas time are as follows:

  • Largest and most traditional Christmas market in Switzerland
  • Longest illuminated Christmas street in Europe
  • Great Christmas shopping possibilities
  • Top and specialised Christmas shops like the Johann
  • Wanner Christmas House
  • Numerous Christmas concerts
  • Guided Christmas tours
  • Ideal starting point for a European Christmas adventure
