GAMLE BERGEN

Opening hours: 10:00-17:00

Old Bergen is a reconstructed town with approx. 50 wooden houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Here you will find private homes from various periods, as well as a number of shops and workshops. Countless rooms and objects bring the city’s history through the generations to life. Old Bergen is an idyllic reminder of what Bergen used to be like, and a guided tour of the houses is a fascinating, entertaining and family-friendly experience.

The famous fish market in Bergen is a part of «Torget i Bergen». Here you will also find fruit, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts, and souvenirs.

The Hanseatic Museum shows how the German merchants from The Hanseatic League lived and worked. From 1350 to 1750 these merchants traded stockfish and grains from their office in Bergen. The museum was opened in 1872 and has two trading houses, one facing the sea and one in back of the tenement. You may walk through this building from 1704, the only house on Bryggen which has kept its original interior.

Bryggen’s Museum allows you to experience life in medieval Bergen, and the museum has been built over the remains of the first settlement at Bryggen. The oldest buildings are from the 12th century, and the various finds have been left in the ground where they were found by the archaeologists. Bryggen’s Museum also hosts temporary art displays and themed exhibitions, and it is the starting place for Bryggen Guiding, which is a historic walk through Bryggen’s past that goes from Bryggen’s Museum through the old wooden buildings to the Hanseatic Museum.

The city’s oldest leprosy hospital, St. George’s Hospital, is now not only a monument to thousands of personal tragedies, it is also an important arena for the dissemination of Norwegian work and research on leprosy. In many parts of the world leprosy is commonly known as Hansen’s disease, named after the Norwegian physician Armauer Hansen who discovered the leprosy bacillus in Bergen in 1873. The last patient at St. George’s Hospital died in 1946.

The Bergen Aquarium offers one of the largest collections of North Sea fish and invertebrates in its more than 70 Aquariums. Species from all over the world help to create an exciting presentation of marine life. You can also study a variety of seals and penguins in the outdoor ponds. The Aquarium also has an extension containing a realistic nesting cliff and a multi-screen film; "The Aquarium - Bergen and the local coastline".
