BP oil spill sees British travellers consider Balearic Islands holidays

BP oil spill sees British travellers consider Balearic Islands holidays

With waves of crude oil turning the Gulf of Mexico into a no-go area, British holiday-makers are looking closer to home for their all-inclusive holidays.

Holiday-makers just can’t catch a break at the moment, can they? First the ash cloud disrupted flights for over a month, and now BP has allowed 216 million gallons of crude oil to leak into the Atlantic Ocean. But holiday booking trends over the past month point to holidaymakers adapting, with many choosing Mediterranean hotspots like the  Balearic Islands and Canary Islands as an alternative destination.

"BP might have capped the leak, but we’ve found that since the disaster bookings for holidays in the Gulf of Mexico and even the Caribbean have dropped off dramatically," says  Travelmatch.co.uk's Richard Bray. "On the other hand, Balearic Islands holidays and  Canary Islands holidays have shot up. It’s clear that holidaymakers have been scared off by the oil slick."

Canny holidaymakers looking to book a holiday for this summer or even next spring will be looking to predictions on the oil slick’s movement, with many experts claiming that it will reach popular holiday spots like the Florida coast and the Keys soon.

That’s where Travelmatch.co.uk can help. Had a holiday in Cancun planned? No need to worry – the beaches on  holidays to Majorca and Ibiza offer just as much as sun and relaxation, with nightlife to rival the infamous Mexican party spot. With over 7 million holidays and 5000-plus hotels and cruises to choose from, Travelmatch.co.uk’s travel discovery engine can help find the perfect holiday.
