Celebrity spotting in Puerto Rico
Monday 9, May 2011
Puerto Rico has long attached celebrities to its shores in the Caribbean. Famous holiday makers include Enrique Iglesias, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Morgan Freeman, Shania Twain and Jennifer Lopez.
Both Jennifer Lopez and Puerto Rican born pop singer and actor Ricky Martin have stayed at the Ritz-Carlton. Located on San Juan’s beachfront, the property stretches for eight acres across Isla Verde. There are 416 rooms and suites, a casino, restaurant and spa.
The island has also become a hot filming location over recent years, bringing several A-list stars to the islands shores.
The northeast coast of Puerto Rico provides filmmakers with a natural desert island location, boasting crystal white sand and clear turquoise waters with the backdrop of the misty mountains and rainforest making it the ideal setting for the two part TV adaptation of Robert Lewis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island starring comedian Eddie Izzard. Treasure Island is set to be broadcast in Christmas 2012 on Sky One.
In 2009, film crews travelled to the island’s capital, San Juan, accompanied by Depp, to film an adaptation of Hunter S Thompson’s national bestseller The Rum Diary. Filming took place in the capital’s colonial old town, Viejo San Juan, showcasing the iconic, narrow streets and hidden away bars known as chinchorros.
In autumn 2010, filming commenced for the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, set to be released May 20, 2011. Johnny Depp returned alongside new co-star Penelope Cruz for a scene shot at the Castillo San Cristobal situated in Old San Juan. This UNESCO protected, partially enclosed fortress stands separate from the main island and is home to some of the island’s most impressive historic buildings including Fort San Felipe del Morro and El Palacio de Santa Catalina.
Canadian country pop singer-songwriter Shania Twain chose a beach in Rincón, Puerto Rico, for her wedding earlier this year to Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud. The Rincón region, on Puerto Rico’s West coast offers some of the best surfing beaches in Puerto. It is also home to many calm, clear Caribbean beaches including Corcega Beach.
American born film and television actress Sarah Michelle Gellar and Spanish singer-songwriter Enrique Iglesias have both been spotted on different occasions in San Juan’s Water Club Hotel. Nestled on one of the finest beaches in Isla Verde, guests can enjoy yoga classes on the beach or on the Beach Club San Juan’s rooftop. The 84 room hip hotel has a minimalist feel and each suite has its own telescope, ideal for star gazing of an evening.
Enrique Iglesias has stayed at many of San Juan’s best hotels, including El San Juan Hotel and Casino, set within lush landscaped gardens on the waterfront of the Isla Verde district in San Juan. El San Juan Hotel and Casino is located a short distance from Plaza Las Americas, one of the Caribbean's premier shopping malls, renowned attractions and hot nightspots. The history and charm of Old San Juan can be discovered in a short walk from the hotel.
The Parrot Club, at the Southern end of Old San Juan and set in the trendy district of South Fortaleza Street offers excellent Caribbean fare in a unique setting. This is one of screen legend Morgan Freeman’s favorite hang-outs, where he has been spotted on numerous occasions.
Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan have been seen browsing the chic designer bouquets of Ashford Avenue, just east of Old San Juan.
Located at the gateway to the Caribbean, the island of Puerto Rico is 110 miles long and 35 miles wide. There is a unique juxtaposition of old and new, where modern business structures stand beside traditional Puerto Rican and colonial Spanish influences.
