Chicago’s Art Institute now offers free guided tours for smart phone users
Thursday 21, March 2013
Visitors to Chicago’s Art Institute can now download a free app for android and apple devices, offering over 50 personalised tours of the museum.
Each tour features six to ten works of art, with information explaining the connection the pieces have to a particular theme or its historical significance. The app also offers visitors a self guided tour of the museum, with maps of the galleries and information about the museum’s current exhibitions.
New technology has been installed throughout the building – including free wi-fi access for all visitors and 200 sensors which act as a GPS system for smart phone users. Visitors can log on to the Art Institute’s system to guide themselves through the various galleries and exhibitions.
The Art Institute Tours app is the fourth downloadable app by the museum.
The French Impressionism app, available on android and apple devices, explores the museum’s French Impressionism collection, offering images of over 100 pieces of work, information about each painting, biographies of the 22 artists who have their work featured within the museum, videos and audio tours.
The Member Card App has been developed for the Art Institute’s members to carry their membership cards on their phones, rather than in their pockets. The Member Card features a selection of images from the museum’s permanent collection and a barcode that allows access to special exhibitions.
Finally, the Art Institute also has a Members Magazine App, which ipad users can subscribe to monthly information about the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions.
