Tivoli is a famous amusement park and pleasure garden that was opened on August 15, 1843. It is the second oldest amusement park in the world. The park is best known for its wooden roller coaster, Rutsjebanen which is one of world's oldest wooden roller coasters that is still operating today and the world's tallest carousel, Himmelskibet (80 meters high) that offers panoramic views of the city. Besides the rides, Tivoli Gardens also serve as a venue for various performing arts and as an active part of the cultural scene in Copenhagen.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is an art museum of international stature in the centre of Copenhagen. It houses over 10.000 works of art divided up into two principal collections. One is of works from the Mediterranean cradle of Western culture, the other of Danish and French art from the 19th and 20th centuries.

 

AMELIENBORG PALACES

Opening hours: 11:00-16:00, change of guards 12:00

Amalienborg is a real royal castle although it doesn't have towers and spires. This is where the Queen lives during the winter season and it is also the venue of the famous balcony scenes, which take place whenever the royal family seizes the occasion to greet the people. Even though the castle is primarily the residence of the royal couple, visitors have the chance to experience some of the royal chambers that are not in daily use.

Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen houses several important institutions. The Danish Parliament has the majority of the palace's rooms at its disposal, while the Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court are also found within the palace. The Royal Reception Rooms in the palace's north wing, the palace church and most of the Riding Ground Complex are available to the Royal Family. Beneath Christiansborg visitors can see the ruins of two even older buildings on the site, namely Absalon's Castle and Copenhagen Castle.

Rosenborg Castle is not only a fairytale castle it is also a fascinating museum of cultural history which houses some of Denmark's greatest cultural treasures, not least the Crown Jewels and the Danish Crown Regalia. The museum tells the history of the Danish kings through 300 years, from Frederik II in the late 16th century to Frederik VII in the 19th century.

 

RUNDETAARN (Round Tower)

Opening hours: October-May 10:00-17:00, June-September 10:00-20:00

Rundetaarn, or the round tower, is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe and stars have been watched here since 1642. At the time when Christian the IV built the tower Denmark was quite famous for its astronomical achievements thanks to the astronomer Tycho Brahe. When he died in 1601 the King wished to continue the research of Brahe and thus the round tower came into being. Today it has been awhile since the scientists left the telescope, but the observatory is still frequently used by amateur astronomers and the many visitors of the tower.

 

CARLSBERG BESOGSCENTER (Brewery)

Carlsberg is one of the Nordic region's oldest breweries and reveals at the same time an impressive and compelling story about the founder J.C. Jacobsen and his son Carl. The 10.000 m² Visitors Centre is located within the buildings of J.C. Jacobsen's original brewery founded in 1847. Several of the remarkable production halls have been converted into exhibition areas and tableaux presenting highlights from Carlsberg's fascinating historical development.

 

GUINNESS WORLD OF RECORDS MUSEUM

Opening hours: January-June 15. and September-December Sunday-Thursday 10:00-18:00, Friday-Saturday 10:00-20.00, June 15-August 10:00-22:00

Visit the 1,000 square metres attraction filled with exciting records in sport, art, music, nature and science. Meet the world's tallest man who measured 272 cm - just one of the many attractions providing at the very least an hour's entertainment for all the family.

Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, at the seaward approach to the sound, Øresund, is one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles. Known all over the world from Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is also the most famous castle in Denmark and is visited each year by about 200,000 Danes and tourists.

FREDERIKSBORG CASTLE

King Christian IV's magnificent renaissance castle in Hillerød north of Copenhagen was built in the beginning of the 17th century. In the following centuries the castle provided the setting for important ceremonial events, first and foremost the anointing of absolute monarchs. Today the castle has been transformed into a national historical museum.

ROSKILDE

VIKINGESKIBS MUSEET

The museum puts Viking times in perspective with focus on the five viking vessels, which were raised from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord and shown in the large viking hall. The neighbouring museum island is the hub of many different activities. Here you will find a boatyard, an archeology workshop and Tunet.

LERJE

Getting there: S-Train from Copenhagen Central station to Lerje - 110 km, 2 hours - 180 DKK/return, than Bus Nr. 233 to the park

 

LEJRE FORSOGSCENTER

Land of Legends (in Danish, Sagnlandet Lejre) is an open-air park in the most beautiful Danish countryside, where you can stroll among reconstructions of ancient living environments, like the Iron Age village, the Stone Age camp, the Viking market, the 19th century-farm cottages, and many more. In the weaving, the pottery and the smithy workshops experiments are carried out to investigate historic and prehistoric technology and replicas are produced of tools, costumes and household utensils from the past.

FRILANDSMUSEET

The Open Air Museum north of Copenhagen is one of the largest and oldest in the world. Spread across 86 acres of land today the museum houses more than 50 farms, mills and houses from the period 1650-1950. Virtually every region in Denmark and the Faeroe Islands as well as the former Danish provinces of southern Sweden and northern Germany is represented so at the Open Air Museum you can travel the length and breadth of Denmark in a single afternoon - just a stone's throw from Copenhagen centre.

 

BREDE VAERK

Brede Works was once Denmark’s biggest textile factory in the 1800s, new technology has now been used to tell the story of working life at the cloth mill, the growth of industrial society and the welfare state. This is done in an innovative way with objects, sounds, light and film.

The Malmöhus Castle is the oldest remaining Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. It was built in the 15th century and has been used as a fort as well as a prison before it became a museum.  You will find collections of art, folklore and natural history here, as well special exhibitions are presented all year around.

 

SANKT PETRY KYRKA

Opening hours: 10:00-18:00

Getting there: 10 minutes walk from the train station

The Church of Saint Peter is a large church in Malmö that began being built in 1319. It is built in the Gothic style and has a 105 metre tall tower.
