Epoque Hotels - Madrid Destination of the Month - May 2010

Football lovers will surely have a reason to go to Madrid this month. The Spanish capital is in fact hosting the 2010 Champions League Final. On 22 May, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will see one of the most renowned football matches take place on its grounds: the Champions League Final.

For the fourth time, Madrid hosts this important event: the 1957, 1969 and 1980 finals crowned Real Madrid, Milan and Nottingham Forest, respectively. This year the event will take place on a Saturday, seeing Bayern Munich and Inter Milan playing for the prestigious cup. The Spanish capital will be celebrating the event for a whole week full of sport and celebrations: the UEFA has prepared eight days' worth of activities for young people and families to see football and its competitive spirit from up close – the Champions Festival, which includes, the Women's Champions League final, to be on the 20 May and a friendly match between the youth teams (under 19) of both men's finalist clubs. Likewise, the Parque de El Retiro will host various attractions for young and old, themed pavilions about the Champions League, exclusive collector items, interactive activities and autograph sessions with the stars of European football who will turn Madrid into a great celebration of football.

Should you not like football, or rather go on a shopping spree, Madrid has also something to offer to you this May. The famous Gran Vía, one of the city's most impressive backdrops and the main shopping area, is celebrating its centenary. Gran Vía turns 100 this year and Madrid is ready to celebrate in style, with a variety of activities organized by public and private institutions taking place. Theatre, music and art blend to commemorate the avenue's significance, at once transforming the city and making it all the more cosmopolitan. Architecture lovers will find pleasure in walking down this avenue: historicism, modernism, art-déco and rationalism are the background for the best shopping in town. Don't miss out the chance to take a walk down Gran Vía to uncover its history and the transformations it has undergone over the years while enjoying some live acts at the Fiestas de San Isidro.
