Air France, the first airline to operate the A380 to Africa

This world first illustrates the importance Air France places on its African routes which represent 12% of Air France-KLM's revenue.

Johannesburg is the Group's leading destination in Africa in terms of the number of passengers carried. Together, Air France and KLM operate 24 weekly flights between Paris, Amsterdam and South Africa, including 7 to Cape Town operated by KLM.

A long history of Air France and KLM in South Africa

With its first flight to South Africa operated by a Comet in 1953, Air France has been flying to this country for the last 57 years.

  • In 1961, UTA flew the 9,000 kms between Paris and Johannesburg by DC8 in 10 hours and 17 minutes, with a stopover in Brazzaville,
  • In 1973, UTA replaced the DC8 with the DC10 and in 1983 introduced the Boeing 747 on this route.
  • In 1993, UTA and Air France merged. There were three weekly flights to Johannesburg. In 1996, Air France increased the number of weekly flights to 5 and the service became daily in 1998.
  • In 2007, Air France started operating the Boeing 777-300 between Johannesburg and Paris.

KLM operated its first flight to South Africa in 1938. KLM has been operating scheduled flights since 1947.
