Florence, Rio and Paris are top flight baby names
Thursday 26, August 2010
David and Samantha Cameron are in good company in seeking to name a child after a holiday destination, according to new research released by bounty.com.
The Prime Minister and his wife are considering including something Cornish when they name their new daughter, who was born in Truro on Tuesday.
Visits abroad by UK residents may have fallen at the fastest rate on record since the 1970s* but it seems parents are increasingly influenced by holiday destinations when naming their children – with over 18,000 parents choosing to call their babies after places such as Bali, Capri and Cuba over the past 10 years.
Florence, Rio and Paris are the most favoured holiday themed names chosen by parents, closely followed by India, Sydney and Lucia. The New York Borough of Brooklyn, not the most exotic location for a trip away, also makes the top ten with over a thousand parents taking the lead of the Beckhams when naming their children.
And it’s not just holidays abroad that are inspiring parents with a total of 1,255 Devons born over the past 10 years – not to mention 6 Brightons and 4 Dublins!
Faye Mingo, spokesperson for Bounty Parenting Club who carried out the research said: “With the holiday season upon us, we wanted to take a look at how influenced parents have been by previous trips away when naming their children. Our records show that parents are becoming more and more creative with their choices and increasingly inspired by destinations – with children already called Tuscany, Texas, Capri and China already amongst us!”
Bounty also conducted a poll of 2,248 parents to find out their holiday plans for this year and discovered that mums have an average of 1.7 holidays planned, spending a total of £1,335 on one main holiday and one short break. The research also uncovered that ‘getting away from the normal routine’ was the thing they were most looking forward to about their holidays.
England remains the most likely destination for parents, with domestic holidays possibly less daunting to mums than travelling abroad and Spain, France and the US are the most likely destinations.**
