Iceland among Top 10 safest countries and Reykjavík is the winner of Tripadvisor Awards
Thursday 20, May 2010
Online magazine Tourism Review has announced Iceland as one of the top ten safest countries in the world to travel to. Reykjavík also consistently scores very high on safety, but Visit Reykjavík's 2009 survey showed that 93% of visitors to Reykjavík agree or strongly agree that Reykjavík is a safe destination.
The magazine states: "Iceland is very famous for its hot water springs, geysers, and unspoiled nature. There is in fact only one city of importance called Reykjavik, so if you do not like seeing too many people Iceland is an ideal place to visit. The murders rate is 0.00 and Iceland is with no doubt the safest country in the world! There are only 700 officers in the country and they do not carry guns. The whole country has only 130 prisoners, who are allowed to go home for public holidays. There is also the lowest crime rate in the world!"
The other 9 safest countries to travel to are Norway, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Denmark, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Ireland.
Reykjavík is among the top 25 European destinations, top 10 relaxation and spa destinations in the world and top 10 outdoor & adventure destinations in Europe, according to the world's most popular and largest travel community, Tripadvisor.com.
The winning destinations of the 2010 Traveler's Choice Destination Awards are honored based on the opinions of millions of travellers on Tripadvisor.com. The winners are determined by a combination of travelers' destination comments, favourite places, and overall destination popularity on TripAdvisor.
Destinations were awarded in the following categories: Top Destinations in the U.S. and World, Best for Families, Romance, Beach & Sun, Culture &Sightseeing, Food &Wine, Nightlife, Outdoor &Adventure, Relaxation &Spa, and Top Emerging Destinations.
“Millions of travelers rely on TripAdvisor for travel inspiration and have helped identify the world’s most outstanding destinations,” said Christine Petersen, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “From stunningly beautiful locales to hot spots with amazing attractions, the 2010 Travelers’ Choice Destinations Award winners are truly incredible places that travelers love.”
This is what Tripadvisor says about Iceland's capital:
"Reykjavik bears the distinction of being the world’s northernmost capital, and for many Icelandic visitors it also serves as a gateway to the rugged adventure options beyond. Recharge after outdoor pursuits in one of the many geothermal springs or luxurious indoor spas. We appreciate Reykjavik’s open-minded and energetic culture that includes a hip and internationally recognized music and arts scene, great food and notoriously "enthusiastic" nightlife."
More and more travellers think that researching and planning a European city break is half the fun and they're not interested in pre-arranged trips or escorted tours. Self-guided tours offer a lot of advantages but require some guidance and good resources.
With the recent wild fires, disrupting flights and increasing air pollution, environmental quality is a growing factor in attracting tourists.
