Jamaica Twist returns with Bob Marley at the Notting Hill Carnival 2011
Friday 22, July 2011
With festival season well and truly upon us, the biggest and best in Europe, the Notting Hill Carnival, is only weeks away.
This year’s world famous route through the streets of Notting Hill will once again play host to the most vibrant and colourful float, the Jamaican Twist, proudly and aptly sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board.
Inspired by Jamaica’s national motto, ‘Out of many, one people’, which refers to the island’s multicultural heritage, The Jamaican Twist float – known as a ‘band’ - will bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. To add an even greater Twist to this year’s proceedings and to mark the 30th anniversary of one of Jamaica’s most famous son’s life, the float will play homage to Bob Marley, which will be the crux of the theme for both the music and costumes.
Chris Shaw, Jamaican Twist’s Event Director commented on this year’s carnival: “The originality and creativity of Jamaica Twist, who are sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board, has been recognised year on year at Carnival, picking up no fewer than six awards over the past three years.
“Its theme for this year has been unveiled as ‘Bob Marley’ too honour the 30th Anniversary of his life. As such, the carnival costumes promise to be as spectacular as ever, with the male and female Carnival King and Queen representing ‘Bob Marley – the King of Reggae’.
“As with previous years, 2011 Jamaican Twist is sure to draw the biggest attention from the crowds as it passes through the streets of Notting Hill, with the recognisable reggae Marley beats pumping from its sound system.”
Regional Director of the Jamaica Tourist Board, Elizabeth Fox also commented: “Notting Hill Carnival is the perfect platform for Caribbean destinations such as Jamaica, to showcase exactly what the destination is about: culture, music, history, dance, gastronomy and above all, having fun! As such, the Jamaica Tourist Board and initiatives such as Jamaica Twist go hand-in-hand, which is why we are proud to sponsor and be associated with the float at the 2011 Notting Hill Carnival.”
For the more adventurous of revellers, the island of Jamaica hosts one of the world’s most famous and vibrant Carnival seasons. Between February and March of each year the island comes alive with costume, festivals and music, with soca fêtes almost every weekend outside of Bacchanal and Jamaica Carnival events. The multiple-award winning Jamaican Twist Carnival Club is once again offering revellers the chance take part in the iconic event by dancing their way through the streets of London to a Caribbean rhythm as part of its vibrant Jamaica troupe at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival.
No music, dance or performance experience is required to participate in Jamaican Twist - the electrifying atmosphere of Carnival guarantees to get feet moving and hips shaking in true Caribbean style. Participants can take part either as a costumed performer, or as part of the larger T-shirt band. To participate, the Costume Section is £85, which includes the spectacular full 2011 Bob Marley female Costume, a pre-selected meal, drinks & tasty Jamaican patties and a T-shirt for Monday’s fun Mas. To be part of the T-shirt section, there will be a cost of just £15, for which participants will receive their very own Jamaican Twist T-shirt, which can be customised to add individuality and style to the band.
