Liss Ard Estate in West Cork, Ireland, Reopens for summer 2011
Monday 9, May 2011
Located on a stunning 200 acre private estate, a few minutes from the centre of Skibbereen in rural West Cork, Liss Ard Country House and Liss Ard Lake Lodge have reopened following an extensive renovation to offer a new bespoke family holiday experience in a unique location with accommodation for families as well as groups of up to 49 people.
Liss Ard Country House is an elegant Georgian mansion dating back to 1850 with commanding views over the surrounding countryside. The house, which was originally built by the chieftain of the O’Donovan Clan, has undergone a complete refurbishment to create six rooms and suites in a modern classical style with the emphasis on contemporary comfort, whilst still retaining the charm of a bygone era.
Adjacent to the mansion, the former 18th century stable block has been converted into the Garden Mews house and contains a further nine contemporary and comfortable bedrooms with views of the parterre and potager. The ground floor rooms have their own private walled gardens and are ideal for a family group who can rent the Garden Mews with Liss Ard Country House or take it separately.
A short stroll from these two buildings, along pathways and garden streams, Liss Ard Lake Lodge is a picturesque 10 bedroom Victorian lodge perched on a slope with breath-taking views over the 50 acre Lough Abisdealy. The Lodge’s reception room leads on to a comfortable sitting room and large dining room with its original open fireplace and spacious conservatory.
In the past Liss Ard was renowned as a private haven to numerous celebrities including Oasis, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Patti Smith and Nick Cave, who prized its peaceful, rural location. The estate remained unused for several years but has been refurbished by Roman and Chitra Stern in partnership with Nigel Chapman, who is best known as one of the founders of Luxury Family Hotels (Fowey Hall, Woolley Grange, Moonfleet Manor and Ickworth) and most recently, Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel in Portugal.
Putting this experience to good use, the team at Liss Ard have created a place where the emphasis is firmly on spending time outside as a family and where children take centre stage.
Guest facilities and activities include complimentary bicycles with a one mile mixed terrain cycle route that loops around part of the grounds for older children and adults. For those who enjoy water based activities there’s the opportunity to go fishing, wild swimming or take out a complimentary kayak on the lake. Liss Ard is also well equipped for indoor fun with table tennis, PlayStation, 'make-n-do' and board games. An estate host is on hand to organise the activities, allowing Mum and Dad to escape for a spa massage or just relax with afternoon tea in the library or drawing room.
In addition it is possible to arrange golf at top internationally recognised courses such as Old Head Kinsale or Ballybunion.
Dining at Liss Ard is a relaxed affair with simple, uncomplicated food bursting with freshness and flavours. Each day Cliodhna, the cook meets guests to let them know what fresh produce is available in the market and discusses the dishes that guests would like her to serve for dinner that night. As an old country house, Liss Ard tries to emulate the meal experiences of a bygone age, so that depending on numbers, meals are served at a communal table with convivial conversation and discussion a key accompaniment to each meal.
Children's teas are served between 17h30 and 18h30 each day, but children are welcome to join their parents in the dining room.
The magnificent gardens and woodlands at Liss Ard have been planned to reveal a collection of 'garden rooms' with areas such as the lakeside walk, the waterfall garden, the woodland garden, the water garden, the arboretum and the wildflower meadow. Liss Ard or ‘Lios Aird’ in Gaelic meaning ‘high fort’, is located close to the site of an original ring fort and souterrain (or hiding place).
The estate also features the ‘Irish Sky Garden’. This huge earth and stone work called ‘The Crater’ was created by the American artist James Turrell who is world-renowned for his works on the theme of 'Light'. With its contemplative 'Vault Purchase' or plinth at its centre this landscape feature allows the viewer to lie on their back and gaze up through the crater’s ‘bowl’ to the sky above.

More and more travellers think that researching and planning a European city break is half the fun and they're not interested in pre-arranged trips or escorted tours. Self-guided tours offer a lot of advantages but require some guidance and good resources.
With the recent wild fires, disrupting flights and increasing air pollution, environmental quality is a growing factor in attracting tourists.
