London Midland cuts energy use and increases recycling with series of initiatives

London Midland has cut energy use and increased recycling with a series of initiatives across its network.

The rail operator, which provides services from London to Liverpool and across the West Midlands, has published its 2010 Corporate Responsibility Report with the emphasis on safety and the environment and working with communities, passengers and employees.

London Midland’s managing director, Mike Hodson, said: “This report documents all of the hard work that is being done at London Midland and explains our progress against these five key areas.

“We’re committed to driving positive change whether it’s reducing our energy consumption or working with communities to provide the best possible service.”

Mr Hodson said he was particularly pleased to receive the Mayor of London’s Green 500 Silver award for reducing energy consumption.

In the report, London Midland highlights the following achievements:

  • 86% overall customer satisfaction – the most improved operator (National Passenger Survey)
  • Over 90% of our electric trains are equipped with regenerative braking technology, returning energy to the national grid.
  • We’ve reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 11% (over 700 tonnes)
  • 50% of London Midland’s waste is recycled
  • Investment in additional stabling has led to reduced empty vehicle mileage
  • Improved secure cycle parking at 26 of our stations
  • Secure station accrediation has been achieved for 80% of our passenger footfall
  • 1,000 frontline staff will attend a new service disruption course
  • We’ve held a series of price-busting rail sales, such as the Great Escape

Mr Hodson added: “Our passengers want a reliable, punctual service but they also want a responsible employer and neighbour. We know we still have a great deal to do but we’re making real progress and corporate responsibility lies at the heart of our decision making as a business whenever possible.”
