More than 15 million people are planning to go on holiday in June for the Queen’s Jubilee

More than 15 million people are planning to go on holiday in June for the Queen’s Jubilee

It’s been a case of first come first served in the race to beat colleagues to book the ‘golden three days’ which equate to nine days off work. Nearly two in five (38 percent) found it a struggle to book time off while one in five (21percent) didn’t manage to book their holiday because colleagues had beaten them to it.

London Stansted Airport is expecting to see a boost in the number of travellers this June, following research which found that more than 15 million* (25%) Brits intend to go away to make the most of the extra bank holidays.

As with the Royal Wedding last year, where more than 10 million** people aimed to create an extended break by using the extra bank holidays, the research found that of those who have already booked the time off, more than 3 million*** are planning to go abroad.

It’s been a case of first come first served in the race to beat colleagues to book the ‘golden three days’ which equate to nine days off work. Nearly two in five (38%) found it a struggle to book time off while one in five (21%) didn’t manage to book their holiday because colleagues had beaten them to it.

Nick Barton, Managing Director of London Stansted Airport said: “If you’re looking to take advantage of the extra bank holidays this June, then we’ve got a number of new routes to some really exciting destinations. We have the biggest choice of European destinations and with millions of people looking to take flight, it’s a great opportunity to take advantage and explore somewhere new.”

There is still time to book a break away so if you are looking for a little destination inspiration, London Stansted Airport has created a list of the top five destinations for the double bank holiday this June:

  • Albania – explore the coastal wetlands of Karavastaha, or Kune-Vaini, home to rare birds. It’s also possible to cycle through the stunning Gramoz mountains from Korça to Përmeti, stopping to sample the local food, uniquely influenced by Turkish, Greek, and Italian, in restaurants along the way.
  • Croatia - stay in the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik with its marble streets and baroque buildings, and take a sea kayak tour around the old wall.  Or fly into Split and rent a sailing boat to go island hopping around the Dalmatian Coast, for which June is the best time.
  • Morocco - take a traditional Moroccan cooking class at La Maison Arabe in Marrakech, or adrenaline junkies can head to the small fishing village of Taghazoute, just forty minutes drive north of Agadir, for some surfing followed by a relaxing yoga class.
  • Malta – scuba diving is an all year round activity and it’s a new route from Stansted. Visit beautiful Valletta, the capital of the Malta archipelago, with its port and old ruins, and then chill out on the beach at Blue Lagoon Bay between Comino and Cominotto island.
  • Istanbul – haggle for carpets and leather goods in the Kapali Çarşisi (Grand Bazaar), unwind with a traditional hamam massage, and then head out to the rooftop bars and restaurants to see the most sweeping skyline and exotic cocktail list.  Stansted will be running double daily flights with Pegasus from April.

Nick Barton also said: “Stansted has been named the most punctual airport in Europe, and we’ll do our best to get you off the ground on time with the minimum of fuss.  So even if you haven’t booked time off, why not use the long weekend for a short escape where your holiday will begin the moment you step inside the terminal.”
