Olympic hotel rates are now at normal levels

JacTravel, the UK-based wholesaler, best known for its extensive range of hotels online and inbound travel services, has recently observed a substantial decline in Olympic hotel rates, which have now reached normal levels.

Rates during the Games had been inflated by as much as 300% two months ago but they have been falling progressively, as it has become increasingly clear that the Olympic Games deters regular tourists.  Rates after the Games are either back to normal or, for some hotels, are 15-20% down on the same period last year, owing to promotional rates.

JacTravel, which books over half a million bed nights a year in London, reports that the majority of its hotel partners have opened up availability and reduced rates significantly in the past couple of weeks.  For example, four star hotels quoting wholesale rates of £300-£400 have dropped them by around 65% to £109-£150.  Declines in the lower categories have been even more substantial, with some 2* properties cutting trade prices 75% from £200 to £50.

For example, a double room at a good quality 4* Hotel is now £140 per room to the guest, a double room at a good quality 3* Hotel is now £90 per room and a double room at a good quality 2* Hotel is now £60.

JacTravel Director, Angela Skelly, commented: “At last, we’re back to near normal summer rates and normal cancellation terms. Last minute visitors from Continental Europe can now also take advantage of very good prices on the Eurostar to London during the Games. Olympic tickets are still available, particularly for the football, and bargains are to be had for many of the top shows in the West End. After the Games, London will effectively be ‘on sale’.”
