Throughout 700 years, Akershus Castle has played a central role in Norwegian history. As a Royal residence, centre of administration and as a military fortification, the fortress and the castle have been the stage of both mundane and dramatic events, inhabited and visited by several significant historical persons. A visit to Akershus Castle is a journey through Norway’s history from the 12th Century until the present. The Nobel Peace Center is one of Norway's most modern museums with an exciting combination of changing and permanent exhibitions. In the charming Bærumske Ironworks from 1610 you will today find about 50 shops, restaurants, handicraft and art galleries and workshops. Idyllic park with changing sculpture exhibitions, old workers' houses and a museum.

The Norwegian Maritime Museum is located on the waterfront at Bygdøynes on the Bygdøy peninsula. Visitors can enjoy fascinating environmental exhibitions about fishing, ship building, shipping, marine archeology and impressive collections of boat models and marine paintings. By the harbour you can see the arctic vessel "Gjøa" and an exhibition of old boats. The museum's exciting supervideograph presents "Maritime Norway", which shows a unique and fascinating panoramic view of maritime Norway.

The museum tells the story of the Norwegian polar expeditions, who also represent international history in the field of  polar exploration: Nansen's journey across the Polar ocean and his attempt to go to the North Pole, Sverdrup's expedition to Greenland, a voyage where more than 200 000 square kilometers of unchartered land was  discovered, and Amundsens journey to the South Pole, the discovery of the Northwest Passage and his attempt to reach the North Pole by plane and airship. The exhibitions in the museum have a representative selection of animals from the Polar region, like polar bears and penguins.

The Kon-Tiki Museum houses a range of boats and artefacts from Thor Heyerdahl's expeditions. Here you can see the original Kon-Tiki raft (1947) with a 30 foot whale shark underneath, statues and a secret family cave from Easter Island (1956), the papyrus boat Ra II (1970), and an exciting collection of archaeological finds from Easter Island, East Polynesia, Galapagos and Peru.

The Norsk Folkemuseum is Norway’s largest museum of cultural history. With collections from around the country, the museum shows how people lived in Norway from 1500 to the present. The more than 150 buildings in the Open-Air Museum represent different regions in Norway, different time periods, as well as differences between town and country, and social classes.

The Viking Ship Museum presents great Viking ship discoveries from Gokstad, Oseberg and Tune as well as other finds from Viking tombs around the Oslo Fjord. The world's two best-preserved wooden Viking ships built in the 9th century. Small boats, sledges, cart with exceptional ornamentation. Implements, tools, harness, textiles and household utensils.

Oslo's unique sculpture museum is located in the previous studio and home of sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). The beautiful building is regarded as one of the finest examples of neo-classical architecture in Norway. The collection comprises Vigeland's early works, his portraits and monuments, as well as plaster models for the sculptures in the Vigeland Park. The artist's working process is also well documented in the museum.

The Norwegian Olympic Museum is the only museum in northern Europe that tells the entire history of the Olympic Games from 776 BC up until the present day. The museum has 6000 items, movies, videos, games and a separate Lillehammer 1994 department.

 

MAIHAUGEN MUSEET

Maihaugen is Europe's largest open air museum and is one of the largest museums in Norway, with close to 200 buildings. The founder, Anders Sandvig, collected from old houses and farmyards within the Gudbrandsdalen valley to provide a sample of Norwegian culture and history in a museum. Maihaugen tells the history of how people have been living in the valley of Gudbrandsdalen from the Middle Ages until today. The open air museum is divided into three parts, the Rural Collection, the Town, a typical inland town with a rail way station (1900-1950), and the Residential Area with homes from the 1900s. The Garmo stave church is one of the main attractions. Maihaugen also includes a large photography archive and an indoor museum, which were constructed in 1959 and extended in preparation for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer.

.S. "Skibladner" is the pride of Norway's inland, and one of Norway's best-loved tourist attractions. This preserved and restored paddle steamer is over 150 years old but continues to run a timetabled service in the summer months. The Norwegian Mining museum is situated in Kongsberg town centre, in the old melting hut for the Kongsberg Silver mines.  At the museum you can visit five museums under the same roof: The Norwegian Mining museum, the Royal Mints museum, the Kongsberg Industry museum, the Kongsberg Skimuseum and an exhibition about Norwegian mines and minerals. Joining an exciting tour in the King’s mine you will go by a mine train (2,3 km) into the biggest mine in Kongsberg and be taken on a breathtaking guiding in the shafts, adits and stopes of the adit level in the King's mine.
