Over 100 Rezidor hotels participated in Earth Hour 2010

Over 100 Radisson Blu, Park Inn and Regent hotels participated in Earth Hour 2010 and turned off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour this Saturday to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change.

Joining households and businesses across 125 countries worldwide the Rezidor properties used Earth Hour – an environmental initiative supported by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) – as an opportunity to engage guests, employees and business partners, and organising special events in the dark.

Guests at the Radisson Blu Le Dokhan’s Hotel in Paris, France, were invited to a blind champagne tasting; the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Stavanger, Norway, served a delicious 3-course organic dinner by candlelight; and a gastronomic master class at the Radisson Blu Hotel Kiev, Ukraine, taught diners how to prepare healthy dishes without electricity and with a low impact on the environment. Employees were also encouraged to participate at home and make this change a part of their everyday life through activities such as using energy-saving light bulbs, turning appliances off rather than simply to stand-by, unplugging chargers when not in use and switching to renewable energy.

“Earth Hour was an excellent opportunity to highlight and to further support our company wide Responsible Business programme”, says Sarah Rooney, Manager Responsible Business at Rezidor. This long-standing award-winning programme is based on the three pillars health & safety for guests and employees; respect for social & ethical issues within the company; and a reduced negative impact on the environment. Commitment to mitigating climate change and energy conservation is an important element of this programme and indeed we have achieved remarkable results in this regard. Radisson Blu succeeded in reducing energy consumption by 4% last year as compared to 2008 while for Park Inn the figure was an even more impressive 6%. Rezidor was also the first international hotel group to introduce carbon offsetting possibilities for guests through the loyalty programme, goldpoints plusSM.

London 2012 makes most of learning opportunities in Vancouver 2010

As the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games draw to a close, London 2012 organisers have been taking advantage of the final opportunity to experience and learn from an Olympic Games, before London becomes the next Olympic Host City.

Next Winter Olympic Games: Sochi, Russia

As the 21st Winter Olympic Games wind down in Vancouver, my thoughts naturally turn to the 22nd Winter Olympic Games scheduled for February 7 through 23, 2014, in Sochi, Russia. 2014 will mark the first time that Russia will host the Winter Games – Moscow hosted the Summer Games in 1980.
