The heart of Blue Lagoon's operation is at the Blue Lagoon, Iceland's most unique and popular attraction. A visit to the spa promotes harmony between body, mind and spirit, and enables one to soak away the stresses of modern life. The spa's guests rekindle their relationship with nature, soak up the scenic beauty and enjoy breathing the clean, fresh air. In addition to bathing in the lagoon guests have access to a sauna with a view of the lagoon, a steam bath with white walls that resemble silica mud and a cosy steam bath carved into a lava cave. Guests can also stand beneath a Blue Lagoon waterfall for an energizing massage. Of course, guests bathing in the milky waters of the lagoon have easy access to the famous white silica mud, an essential part of the spa experience. A selection of Blue Lagoon in-water spa treatments and massages are available. They take place in the lagoon, and the fresh air and natural surroundings enhance the feeling of wellness.
HISTORY
The Blue Lagoon in Grindavik sprang to life in 1976 as a by-product crated from the building of a new geothermal power plant in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal area. In 1981, locals began to bathe in the hot water pools created the plant’s operations. Filled with silica mud and minerals, the water had a healing affect on the skin of the bathers. As a result of improved skin conditions, a clinic was opened in 1987, concentrating on psoriasis patients.
FEATURES
Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater is a part of a unique ecocycle where high technology and nature work in perfect harmony in Iceland's extreme environment, bringing us Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater, known for its active ingredients and healing power. The origin of the seawater is from 2000 meters beneath the surface. In its travels through porous lava, a blend of sea and fresh water undergoes mineral exchange and then near the surface, concentration occurs, due to vaporization, evaporation and finally, sedimentation.
The lagoon at the Blue Lagoon holds 6 million liters of water, all of which is renewed in 40 hours. At this depth the temperature is 240°C/464°F and the pressure is 36 times the pressure on the earth’s surface. The geothermal seawater comes into contact with cooling magmatic intrusions and captures the earth’s minerals, resulting in this unique natural source known for its healing power and actives. The water's temperature on the surface is 37-39°C.
The geothermal seawater's special ecosystem has a self-cleansing effect. Its unique active ingredients: Minerals, silica and algae have been praised for their benefits on healthy skin and on skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis. The aquamarine blue color is the result of these active ingedients: minerals, silica and algae.
It is no surprise that the readers of “Conde Nast Traveller” voted Blue Lagoon as the best medical spa worldwide. For five consecutive years Blue Lagoon has been awarded the Blue Flag environmental recognition granted to natural beaches and marinas.
