Sun Country launches Gatwick inaugural flight
Thursday 2, June 2011
Sun Country Airlines has lift off! Following a week of threatening ash cloud, the winds have prevailed and the inaugural flight from London Gatwick to Minneapolis St Paul launched on Sunday 29 May at 10.40am.
A welcome committee met with passengers at Gatwick’s South Terminal to celebrate the first flight to the US with free Mall of America coupon booklets, doughnuts, cookies and giveaways!
Passenger Natalie Krasrnova, 36, was travelling on the inaugural flight to Minneapolis with her family: “It’s great that Sun Country now fly to Minneapolis from Gatwick. We are going to Vegas so it’s nice to be able to break the journey up with a few nights in the twin cities, especially as it is such a long flight. We are all very excited about what is happening here today at Gatwick and pleased to be one of the first passengers on board!”
The new weekly route between Gatwick and Minneapolis St. Paul is one of the airline’s first flights across the Atlantic following a seasonal service in 2010 from Stansted. The service will run until 4 September, 2011 following a high demand over the summer season from travellers.
Stan Gadek, Sun Country president and CEO of Sun Country Airlines, comments: “Minnesota is a great destination for UK travellers – in addition to offering tax free shopping at locations such as Mall of America, the state is a fantastic gateway city to the Great Lakes of North America region and a plethora of outdoor activity.”
“Expanding Sun Country Airline’s network with this Gatwick service is great news for the twin cities and the region and we hope to resume it again in 2012.”
Simon Edwards, Gatwick Airport's Airlines Business Development Manager said: "We are delighted to welcome Sun Country Airlines to Gatwick this Summer, offering passengers the only direct route from London to Minneapolis. Passengers at Gatwick have the widest choice of destinations to fly to as we serve more than 200 destinations in 90 countries. This is more than any other UK airport, and it is great that passengers can now also choose to fly direct to the 'Great Lakes of North America'.

More and more travellers think that researching and planning a European city break is half the fun and they're not interested in pre-arranged trips or escorted tours. Self-guided tours offer a lot of advantages but require some guidance and good resources.
With the recent wild fires, disrupting flights and increasing air pollution, environmental quality is a growing factor in attracting tourists.
