The Ball Season in Vienna
Wednesday 12, January 2011
Every year Vienna hosts more than 300 balls, some featuring as many as nine live orchestras.
The city celebrates the carnival from January until early March and the ball season reaches its peak in January and February. During this time the capital of Austria offers more than 2000 hours of dancing.
Balls are held in the many beautiful palaces in Vienna. The Imperial Hofburg Palace at the Heldenplatz is the main venue. The Emperor’s Ball starts off the ball season in grand style at the magnificent Imperial Palace on New Year’s Eve. In total, twenty glittering ball events await you at this location. The other balls are the Opera Ball, the Cafe Owners Ball at the Kaffeesiederball, the Hunter’s Ball at the Jägerball and the Rudolfina Redoute. Dancers and opera singers from the Vienna Staatsoper often perform at the openings of the larger balls. The major Viennese balls usually start at 9 pm and last until 5 am.
