Welcome to Germany
Monday 7, October 2013
Over the next couple of months, there are plenty of reasons to visit Germany (including, dare we mention it, Christmas).
Garden Tour of Germany
Landscaped gardens are not only a beautiful and striking setting, they are also a space for rest and relaxation . Six landscaped gardens have joined together to form a 'Garden Tour of Germany' that gives visitors the chance to explore and admire these horticultural gems. The new tour takes in Gutspark Marihn in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Lütetsburg Palace Park in East Friesland. The route continues via the parks of Anholt Castle and Dyck Castle in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the south of Germany the bond between culture and nature is plain to see at Friedrich von Gienanth Park, Mainau Island and the picturesque park at Dennenlohe House.
Baden-Baden – A wonderful winter fairytale!
Nestled in the foothills of the Black Forest, the Baden-Baden Christmas Market welcomes visitors from all over the world to a romantic winter fairytale. From 25 November to 30 December more than 100 festive stalls with exclusive Christmas crafts, aromas of roasted almonds, gingerbread and hot mulled wine will put any visitor in a festive mood. There are daily performances, the “living nativity”, the illuminated fairy tale lane and many more highlights.
Migratory bird week, Wadden Sea National Park
From 5 to 13 October 2013 the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park will be celebrating its fifth migratory bird week (Zugvogeltage). Up in the far reaches of north-west Germany, this annual event boasts an extensive and diverse programme, leading with a choice of walking , cycling, boat or bus tours. Visitors will also be 'flocking' to the coast and out to the islands to enjoy exhibitions as well as workshops on photography or bird identification. Enthusiasts can learn more about the long journeys our feathered friends make along the migration routes at a number of culinary and musical events.
Cologne Christmas Markets
The Christmas markets of Cologne never fail to enchant visitors. What more majestic backdrop could there be for a Christmas market than Cologne Cathedral, the city's most famous landmark? Here there are no fewer than 160 craft pavilions - but that's by no means all. You can let yourself be whisked into the realm of the angels at the Christmas market on Neumarkt square, with its gorgeous huts, elaborately lit gables and magical starlight glow. If you fancy something different, visit the Harbour Christmas Market, the Heinzelmännchen market or the gay and lesbian Christmas market, there's something for everyone.
Discover Weimar now - New flight schedule for Erfurt/Weimar Airport
Ever wanted to visit Weimar? Known for its rich cultural life, Goethe, Schiller, Henry van de Velde and Bauhaus. Weimar is intrinsically linked with the great names of Germany's and Europe's intellectual past. The Erfurt/Weimar Airport has extended their flight schedules for the 2013/2014 winter period. Starting the 29th November you can take-off with Germania Airlines from London-Gatwick to Erfurt/Weimar and return twice a week. Discover Weimar now!
Besides the romantic castles and palaces, the Bavarian cultural landscape is also home to twelve large state-run art galleries and cultural museums, which are known far beyond Bavaria's borders: The Neue and Alte Pinakothek, the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Bavarian National Museum, the German Museum, the Museum Brandhorst and the Lenbachhaus Gallery, which reopened in May 2013 after extensive renovations and an extension of a new gallery wing, completed by Foster + partners. Head to the new Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich. Its diverse education program offers insight into the museum’s collection and the culture of Ancient Egypt.
More and more travellers think that researching and planning a European city break is half the fun and they're not interested in pre-arranged trips or escorted tours. Self-guided tours offer a lot of advantages but require some guidance and good resources.
With the recent wild fires, disrupting flights and increasing air pollution, environmental quality is a growing factor in attracting tourists.
