WTO announces winners of Young Economists Award

The winners of the WTO Essay Award for Young Economists 2010 are Dave Donaldson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Olena Ivus of Queen’s University (Canada). The winners were announced at a special session of the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group held at the WTO headquarters in Geneva on 9 September 2010.

The article by Dave Donaldson, entitled “Railroads of the Raj: Estimating the impact of transportation infrastructure”, provides a theoretical and empirical investigation of the impact of large transportation infrastructure projects on income and trade. In the judgment of the Selection Panel, this article represents an important contribution in the area of trade facilitation that will capture the attention of trade experts and the economics profession at large.

The article by Olena Ivus, entitled “Do stronger patent rights raise high-tech exports to the developing world?”, studies the effects of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) Agreement on the volume and the price of high-tech/patent-sensitive exports from developed to developing countries. According to the Selection Panel, this paper is an extremely well-crafted analysis that offers insights relevant to the policy debate.

Their papers were ranked equal first by the Selection Panel (see below). Mr Donaldson and Ms Ivus will share the prize of CHF 5,000 for the Essay Award, which was launched in 2009.

Dave Donaldson is a British and Canadian national. He studied physics at the University of Oxford (UK) and received a Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics (UK). He is an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston (USA).

Olena Ivus is from Ukraine and studied economics at the Chernihiv State Institute of Economics and Management (Ukraine). She received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Calgary (Canada). She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Queen's School of Business at Queen's University, Kingston (Canada).

The Selection Panel for the Essay Award comprised Dr. Jagdish Bhagwati (Professor of Economics, Columbia University), Dr. Hakim Ben Hammouda (Director, Institute for Training and Technical Cooperation, WTO), Dr. Patrick Low (Director, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO), Dr. Robert Staiger (Professor of Economics, Stanford University), Dr. Alberto Trejos (Professor of Economics, INCAE Business School). Dr. Michele Ruta (Economist, Economic Research and Statistics Division, WTO) coordinated the work of the Panel.
