Arundel Castle Springs Open
Wednesday 2, April 2014
Great news for families, green fingered folk and history buffs alike: Arundel Castle in West Sussex has re-opened to visitors.
The Castle promises a thrilling events calendar for 2014 alongside 40 acres of stunning grounds and gardens and a wealth of historical treasures.
Visitors can enjoy a host of events at the Castle, with new offerings for 2014 including Life in a Medieval Castle (16-17 August) and It’s The History Man! in three new guises. 2014 will also see the highly anticipated return of Arundel Castle’s Medieval Joust and Tournament Week, where the Knights of England will be vying to continue their winning streak, 22-27 July.
Family favourite Pirates and Smugglers events will run throughout the season, bringing the swashbuckling 18th Century to life. A band of notorious pirates and smugglers will position their encampment in the grounds of the Castle.
Arundel Castle’s stunning gardens will have plenty of new season blooms to dazzle visitors, with resplendent tulips taking centre stage as the Castle reopens for the annual Tulip Festival. Across a spectrum of colours, 20 different varieties of tulips will be on show.
June will see Arundel Castle’s gardens taken over by thousands of stunning alliums, as part of its Allium Extravaganza, which features bright pom-pom headed blooms. To commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War, the gardens team has created a special ‘Flanders Field’ which will feature the red Flanders Field poppy.
Come rain or shine, Arundel Castle has plenty to offer visitors, from breathtaking artworks by Gainsborough and Van Dyck to an exquisite Regency library and an impressive historic Armoury. For keen film fans, the Castle provides a unique opportunity to explore filming locations from period productions such as the Young Victoria and The Madness of King George.
Castle Manager Bryan McDonald commented: “We are delighted to have opened our doors to visitors for this exciting new season. It is always enjoyable to see visitors enthused by the Castle’s 1,000 year history and inspired by our beautiful gardens.
“With the calendar of events and grand gardens displays we have planned, I feel confident that 2014 will be another splendid year for Arundel Castle and its visitors.”
