Best Travel Site of the Year in the 2010 Webby People’s Voice Awards

The global Web community has once again voted as Best Travel Site of the Year in the 2010 Webby People’s Voice Awards. This year, Webby Awards received nearly 10,000 entries from over 60 countries and all 50 states.

Hailed as the 'Internet's highest honor' by The New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including websites, interactive advertising, online film and video and mobile websites. The Webby Awards is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 650-person judging panel whose members include Martha Stewart, R/GA's Chief Bob Greenberg, David Bowie, Arianna Huffington and Twitter's Biz Stone.

'We are delighted our community has again championed as their favorite website for travel,' said Kelly Brough, Global Online Director for Lonely Planet. 'We put the travel community at the heart of everything we do and this year we have focused on deepening connections with people and places. Among the many things our followers have asked for, we've increased our online editorial offering, reorganized community information to appear on destination pages and now support some of the world's best travel bloggers.'

In addition Lonely Planet's Microsoft Surface application for its Sydney Aiport retail store won the Mobile and Experience Marketing Category by Amnesia Razorfish the agency who developed it.

Founded in 1996, The Webby Awards are known worldwide for its famous five-word speech limit. Past Webby Award winners -- and their speeches -- include Al Gore ('Please don't recount this vote'), Beastie Boys ('Can anyone fix my computer?'), and Stephen Colbert ('Me. Me. Me. Me. Me.')

Lonely Planet will be honored at a ceremony in New York City on June 14, 2010. The following day, fans will be able to watch the ceremony, including Lonely Planet's five-word speech, at the official Webby Awards YouTube Channel.

The Webby Awards have previously recognized Lonely Planet in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2009.
