El Gouna sponsors a kitesurfing world record attempt
Thursday 14, June 2012
El Gouna, the Red Sea’s premier leisure destination, is hoping to sail into the Guinness World Record books this month, as a main sponsor of an exciting record attempt by El Gouna resident and business owner, Maciej Zimowski.
Zimowski, the founder and owner of Red Sea Zone Kitesurfing School in El Gouna, will attempt ‘the longest kitesurfing journey’, surfing 400km along the Red Sea coast from Adabiya Port in the Suez Gulf and swinging past El Gouna before finishing at El Quasir Kalawy Imperial Hotel. The current record of 369.7km was set in May 2010 by Phillip McCoy Midler.
Dependant on weather and wind conditions, the attempt is scheduled to take place between 20 - 30 June 2012. With safety a high priority, Zimowski will be equipped with two GPS navigation devices and will be assisted by a support speed boat throughout his journey.
“We’re really pleased to be supporting Maciej’s attempt and we all wish him the best of luck,” says Mayar Abdelaziz, Vice President of Corporate & Destinations Marketing for Orascom Development. “El Gouna has always been a haven for tourists looking to try out the latest adventure water sports, such as kitesurfing and stand-up paddling, so the whole resort is especially excited to be a part of this world record attempt.”
The record attempt is not the only kitesurfing event taking place at the Red Sea Resort this month; the three day KB4Girls Global Kitesurf Camp 2012 starts from 15 June 2012 and will be led by kitesurfing champion Kristin Boese.
El Gouna’s spacious beaches, coastal winds and shallow waters attract droves of kitesurfers to the destination, while the Resort’s five Kitesurfing Centres provide the latest facilities, equipment and expert staff to help beginners to test the waters for the first time. An extremely young sport, kitesurfing has become increasingly popular since the beginning of the 21st century and will make its first appearance as an Olympic sport at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
