Football for Hope Festival 2010

The Football for Hope Festival is an official event of the 2010 FIFA World CupTM, organised by FIFA, the City of Joburg, streetworldfootball and the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee to showcase - for the first time - the social dimension of the beautiful game as an official element of the World Cup.

A daily cultural programme will be hosted during the event, featuring some of South Africa’s biggest music acts, including HHP, JR, Skwatta Camp, TearGas, Danny K and Kabelo, Gang of Instrumentals and ProKid. These stars will share the stage with local artists from Alexandra.

Feel Good Factor

The Football for Hope Festival is linked to the international Football for Hope movement which provides funding to local community organisations using football for social development. The festival is also linked to FIFA’s 20 Centres for 2010, which will see 20 Football for Hope centres being constructed across Africa, combining sporting, health and educational facilities all in one.

Sport is recognised globally as a catalyst for social change. Football in particular has become a vital instrument in social development programmes around the world that strive to bring about positive change in local communities. In 2005, FIFA and streetfootballworld joined forces to support these programmes, and together established Football for Hope as a global movement to ensure sustainable social development. The Football for Hope Festival is a physical demonstration of this philosophy, and follows on from the first Street Football World Championships held during the 2006 FIFA World Cup™.

Football for Hope Festival uses soccer as a medium to connect different cultures and forge positive social development in disadvantaged communities. As such, the teens participating in the event have been drawn from organisations around the world that address social challenges in the areas of children's rights and education, the environment, health promotion, social integration, peace building and anti-discrimination, through football.

The children were selected based on their commitment to changing their local communities. Making up 32 mixed teams of boys and girls between 15 and 18, the teens battle it out on the pitch in the ultimate game of understanding, rather than merely skill. Playing without referees, any disagreements during the games are settled through dialogue, promoting tolerance and consideration - key values in addressing social challenges.

The teams include those from the United Kingdom, Lesotho, Tahiti, Australia, Kenya, Germany, Cameroon, Rwanda, Cambodia, Brazil, Argentina, Zimbabwe, India and South Africa. Come and support your nation's team - each team will play at least 7 matches during the tournament, providing ample opportunity for you to show your support.

A total of 174 high-intensity, 12-minute matches will be played during the tournament, making for an action-packed day out with a difference. Make sure you get a front row seat!
