Wawel is an architectural complex erected over many centuries atop a limestone outcrop on the left bank of the Vistula River at an altitude of 228 meters above the sea level. The Royal Castle with the crown treasury and armory and the Wawel Cathedral are situated on the hill. The stately halls and exquisite chambers of Royal Castle are filled with priceless art, best period furniture and rare ancient objects. The collection of the 16th-century monumental Flemish tapestries is matchless. The Wawel Cathedral has a 1,000-year history and was the traditional coronation and burial site of Polish monarchs.

The Archdiocesan Museum displays a collection of sacral works of art often withdrawn from worship, from the 14th to the 18th century in the following sections: painting, artistic craft, sculpture, canonicals. Visitors should also be aware that from 1952 to 1967 in both of the present museum houses lived Professor Father Karol WojtyÅ‚a (presently Pope John Paul II), in those days acting as suffragan bishop of Kraków and later as metropolitan archbishop. The museum collects and displays pieces related to His Holiness Pope John Paul II since he started to dwell in the houses.

 

SYNAGOGA IZAAKA

Dating from 1664, the Isaak Synagogue is considered by many to be the most beautiful synagogue in Krakow. The synagogue now houses an exhibition on the history of Polish Jews. On display are moving photographs of former Kazimierz residents and their families as well as the main treasure: several older documentary films on Kazimierz that run continuously during the day.

Oscar Schindler's factory has a sign outside, just like the original sign, which says Deutsche Emalia Fabrika - Oscar Schindler. The visitors can see the stairs and the office at the top that were used in the filming of the movie “Schindler’s list”. The rest of the factory is off limits but visitors can look around the grounds.

AUSCHWITZ / BIRKENAU

Duration: 3-4 hours

Auschwitz was a network of concentration and extermination camps built and operated in occupied Poland by Nazi Germany during the Second World War. It was the largest of the German concentration camps, consisting of Auschwitz I; Auschwitz II-Birkenau; Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also known as Buna, a labor camp; and 45 satellite camps. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is devoted to the memory of the murders in both camps during World War II. The museum performs several tasks, among them research into the Holocaust.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine lies within the Kraków metropolitan area. The mine continuously produced table salt from the 13th century until 2007 as one of the world's oldest operating salt mines. The Wieliczka salt mine reaches a depth of 327 meters and is over 300 km long. It features a 3,5-km touring route for visitors that includes historic statues, mythical figures and an entire cathedral that have been carved out of the rock salt by the miners. In 1978 the Wieliczka salt mine was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites.

JASNA GÓRA MONASTERY

The large baroque monastery of Jasna Góra dominates a hilltop in CzÄ™stochowa and is always bustling with pilgrims and worshippers.  It is the most famous shrine to the Virgin Mary in Poland and the country's greatest place of pilgrimage - for many its spiritual capital. The image of Black Madonna of CzÄ™stochowa, to which miraculous powers are attributed, is Jasna Góra's most precious treasure.
