Qatar in 48 hours: Visit to believe it

A wide range of hotels, top of the range golf courses, traditional shopping experiences, delicious cuisine and exhilarating desert activities make up just a few of the delights Qatar has to offer.

Why not make the most of a flight stopover or a weekend getaway with an unforgettable jam packed 48 hours in Qatar.

With its central location, Qatar attracts a high percentage of business travellers as well as leisure travellers en route to various long-haul destinations. Below is an itinerary to showcase how travellers can make the most of their time in the culturally rich country of Qatar, and all in just 48 hours:

Day one

At 07.00, start the day with an early round of golf at the Doha Golf Club; the perfect time of day as the sun is not too hot.

At 10.00, visit the Souq Waqif, a famous souq (market) in the local region. Renowned for selling traditional garments, spices, handicrafts and souvenirs, Souq Waqif dates back at least a hundred years, and is a popular tourist destination.

Need time to relax and rest? At 13.30, head back to your hotel and receive a massage and spa treatment.  Afterwards, chill out in the Jacuzzi and take a swim in the pool.

At 15.30, explore the galleries of the Museum of Islamic Art, which features one of the largest and finest collections of pieces from one of the world’s great civilizations. With pieces representing more than 1,400 years of civilization and a building that has become an architectural icon, the museum is the jewel in Qatar’s cultural crown.

At 18.00, as the sun sets enjoy a cup of authentic Arabic coffee at one of the many traditional coffee shops which can be found along the seven kilometre stretch of fishing Dhows at the Doha Bay.

At 20.00 taste some traditional Qatari and Middle Eastern dishes at one of Qatar’s traditional restaurants. Enjoy alfresco dining and perhaps try some traditional hummus to start, and Koussa mahshi to follow (stuffed courgettes). Alternatively, for carnivores, try a traditional dish of ghuzi (a whole roasted lamb on a bed of rice and nuts).

After dinner head to Sky View. Situated on the top of a hotel, this open air lounge-bar plays a range of music including dance and European chart hits and showcases amazing views of Doha at night all lit up.

Day two

At 07.30 take a half-day desert safari to the inland sea, and ride on quad-bikes across the sand dunes of Doha. Again, with the sun rising, this is the perfect time to partake in this activity.

If pearls sound appealing, at 12.00, return back to the hotel via the unique Pearl Merchant’s house in Al Warka, perfect for gifts to take home.

In mid-afternoon around 15.00, head to the Al Shahaniya race track for a spot of camel racing. During the 11 mile track, race alongside the camels in your own vehicle, and take close-up photos of the traditional mammals as souvenirs.

At 18.00 head back to the hotel and enjoy a swim at the hotel’s swimming pool. Sit in the hotel lounge and taste some traditional dates whilst absorbing all of the day’s activities.

Then at 20.00, pick one of Doha’s many restaurants offering a wide variety of home cooked specialities including falafel, fattush (a bread salad) or daoud bacha (meat balls and rice), to name a few.

In the morning after a leisurely breakfast, take a taxi to the airport or alternatively stay longer; there are still so many gems to experience in Qatar, the journey doesn’t have to end here...
