Art and culture in Salzburg

No visit is complete without a stroll through the city's fabulous art galleries, an evening at the theater, a concert or dance performance. Don't even think about trying to resist the powerful cultural temptations the city has to offer. You would be missing out on a very enjoyable experience!

Although Salzburg may appear small at first glance, its cultural offerings are immense. Max Reinhard once said: "The atmosphere in Salzburg is permeated with beauty, drama and art." Music, with its operas, concert series, festivals and musicals, is closely associated with the theater, literature, dance, exhibitions and traditional local events. The entire city is a stage and you will discover: if you like art and culture, you'll love Salzburg.

A city of artists and art lovers

Prominent figures, including great composers, authors, singers, gallery owners or conductors, have left their mark on the city. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Michael Haydn, Georg Trakl, Thomas Bernhard, Stefan Zweig, Arturo Toscanini, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Maria von Trapp, Herbert von Karajan, Peter Handke and Gerard Mortier – to name but a few – significantly influenced the city's cultural development.

4,000 events to choose from

The year's wide variety of cultural events, nearly 4,000 in number, are Salzburg's pulsating heart. They are neither inaccessible nor ostentatious. In additional to the internationally renowned and much-noticed events such as the Salzburg Festival, Mozart Week and Advent Singing, the calendar of events is enhanced with new concert series or festivals each years, always attracting an audience.

Highlights on the calendar

The highlights include the Easter and Whitsun Festival, the Dialogs at the Mozarteum, the Jazz Festival, the Winterfest during Advent, the Marionette Theater, The Sound of Music, szene salzburg, ballet performances, Salzburg Street Theater, romantic Palace Concerts and the countless church concerts.

Whatever your inclination may be: discover the wonderful contrast of the old and the new in Salzburg. Day after day. Evening after evening.

MOZART WEEK

Mozart Week is organized by the International Mozarteum Foundation each January around Mozart's birthday, offering opera productions as well as orchestral, chamber music and soloist concerts. World-renowned Mozart conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Andràs Schiff or Marc Minkowski, orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Musiciens du Louvre, Grenoble or the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, ensembles such as the Hagen Quartet or the Artemis Quartet and a variety of soloists are responsible for the festival's artistic reputation in Salzburg. Concerts are held in the Large Hall of the Mozarteum, at the House for Mozart, in the Large Festival Hall and at the Mozarteum University's Solitär.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

Following the enormous success of the stage musical "The Sound of Music" (written and composed by Rogers and Hammerstein - the work was performed on Broadway almost 1500 times, won 6 Tony awards and sold more than 3 million records) visitors from all over the world use the opportunity to see the locations in the city of Salzburg, where the film was shot. Especially amongst fans from overseas the film has reached a unique status and incredible popularity - and many of them dream of following Maria's footsteps at least once in their life.

SALZBURG'S ORCHESTRAS

Salzburg is a city of music and the multitude of concerts performed by Salzburg's orchestras have always afforded great pleasure. The performances are guaranteed to warm the heart of every classical music buff.

Over the years Camerata Salzburg has become one of the busiest chamber music orchestra's in the world. The musicians travel around the world year after year to perform at various festivals and famous concert halls.

The Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg is Salzburg's state and municipal symphony orchestra. Founded in 1841, it has become one of Austria's leading symphony orchestras. The orchestra focuses on fascinating, contemporary interpretations of Viennese classical music but also has an extensive modern and romanticist repertoire. Whether performing its own concert cycle, playing at Mozart Week, the Salzburg Festival or on tour - the orchestra provides an unparalleled listening experience.

SALZBURG FESTIVAL

It has greatly contributed to Salzburg's renown and is one of the world's most exclusive music festivals: ever since it was founded, the Salzburg Festival has been known for its exceptionally high quality of music, the commitment of its international artists and as a successful combination of the traditional and modern.

The Salzburg Festival will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2010. As envisaged by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, one of the Festival's founders, the occasion will call for a celebration that will not only last for weeks but also incorporate the entire city.
