Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese celebrates 2011 with “I will keep a light burning”

Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese continues surprising its guests with new events after the highly acclaimed photo exhibition “Fashion Stills. Si la mode m’était contée”.

On January 4th 2011, the spectacular performance “I will keep a light burning”, by the great French artist Renaud Auguste Dormeuil, is scheduled to take place.

Inspired by Galileo Galilei, eclectic father of modern science, and thanks to a very powerful telescope, the French artist will shoot the stars of the universe, which are invisible to the naked eye, exactly when the Earth is at the furthest of its rotation around the sun.

“The event, brought together with the French Academy in Rome, marks the fertile joint effort with Villa Medici, breeding ground for great artists such as Renaud Auguste Dormeuil” - says Marie Bérengère Chapoton“, General Manager of Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese - “Through “I will keep a light burning” we have paved the way for art, culture and its many forms since we feel that Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese can represent an important speaker for national and international artists”.

On July 6th 2010, the visionary photographer's work began at the Casa Rustica on Janiculum hill, now part of the American Academy in Rome, on the exact spot in which in 1611 Galileo introduced his first monocular for viewing the stars. After taking shots of the constellations, Dormeuil covered the lens of the telescope with a veil in order to preserve the image shooted, which was the nearest representation of the stars in that precise moment.

Dormeuil will repeat this operation on January 4th at 7:30 p.m., in the beautiful gardens of Villa Medici, at the exact moment in which the Earth will be at the extreme of its rotation as opposed to six months ago.

During “I will keep a light burning” Dormeuil will make a fascinating installation in the Villa Medici gardens: a reproduction of the celestial constellation map through 250 candles will be laid down on the ground. From the panoramic Terrasse Cuisine & Lounge, flagship of Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese, it will be possible to observe the fantastic show.

This event, sponsored by Sofitel Rome Villa Borghese, is the perfect opportunity to celebrate 2011, a new year filled with interesting events, exhibitions and surprises for guests and visitors to the elegant Roman hotel.
