To love and to cherish – as long as it’s on a beach

Forget love, honour and obey - all British people want from their first days of married life is sun, sea and sand.

A massive 56 per cent of those asked what their dream honeymoon destination would be by chose a secluded beach - and it most definitely had to be abroad.

Incredibly, fewer than one per cent said they'd opt for a staycation in Britain - and even fewer would consider voluntary work. Even a break in a beautiful European city, such as Paris, Prague or Barcelona, was first choice for just nine per cent.

The beach particularly appealed to women, 61 per cent of whom chose it as their ideal destination, compared with 51 per cent of men. Perhaps that's because one in three men responded gruffly that they never dreamed about their honeymoon.

However, romance wasn't necessarily confined to the holiday destination - 11 per cent of those polled felt that airports were romantic places, and one per cent of men said they had had their best kiss there.

Sean Hagger, head of commercial at, said: "Your honeymoon should be the happiest, most relaxing holiday of your life, so it's natural that people want to spend it in a happy, relaxing place where they're guaranteed sunshine.

"Booking an airport hotel or an airport lounge is a great way to add to the romance and make the holiday even more special. Some of our hotels offer special packages for honeymoon couples, and we've champagne packages at several of our lounges so people can toast that special moment."

The old-fashioned elegance of the Renaissance hotel at Heathrow, with its chandeliers and grand piano, makes it an excellent place to start a romantic break. The honeymoon package includes strawberries, chocolate and champagne in the room.

At Gatwick, the Felbridge Hotel's luxury package includes an upgrade to an air-conditioned club room with Elemis toiletries, a minibar, a 26-inch flatscreen TV, a king-size bed with Hypnos mattresses and, of course, a bottle of champagne. The Stanhill Court, a former manor house surrounded by 35 acres of countryside, won the AA's most romantic hotel award several years running and offers four-poster rooms.

Champagne packages are available in the No 1 Lounges at Gatwick and Stansted.
