OPERA AND OPERETTA
The Vienna State Opera is prized for its exceptional acoustics. There are performances almost 300 nights a year and a different billing virtually every day. The Theater an der Wien has established a name for itself as „the other“ venue for opera. New premieres each month — from baroque to contemporary — are a hit among opera-goers. Meanwhile at the Vienna Chamber Opera, the focus is on rarities. The Volksoper presents classic operas in German, musicals and lively operettas.
The Vienna State Opera is one of the premier opera addresses in the world – where you can enjoy a great variety of operas on the highest artistic level. Because after all, the program at the renowned stage changes every day: with more than 60 operas and ballet works on 287 days for the 2009-10 season - this density of performances puts the Vienna State Opera in the first tier among opera houses.
Every month a premiere, twelve months a year – that is what the Theater an der Wien offers. In the Mozart Year 2006, the musical stage reopened after many years as Vienna's newest opera house.
The prize-winning Marionette Theater at Schönbrunn Palace has Mozart’s "Magic Flute" and "Johann Strauss - On the Beautiful Blue Danube" permanently on the program.
CLASSICAL MUSIC
Every night in Vienna around 10,000 music fans are treated to live classical music, something that is simply unheard of in any other city in the world. Each year the Vienna concert schedule includes more than 15,000 events of various sizes and genres.

Millions of music lovers all over the world are familiar with the Vienna Musikverein as a traditional concert venue. Here, from its Golden Hall, the annual New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic is telecast internationally.
An additional center of concert life is the Vienna Konzerthaus with its art nouveau ambiance. Its musical scope is not limited to the classical repertoire but ranges from the Middle Ages to the most progressive sounds of the present time.
They are often called “the youngest Viennese ambassadors.” And they make music together with such world-class musicians as Pierre Boulez, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Zubin Mehta: the Vienna Boys’ Choir.
There are about 100 Vienna Choir Boys between the ages of ten and fourteen; the group performs 300 concerts annually in four concert choirs before almost half a million spectators all over the world. The Hofmusikkapelle consists exclusively of a chorus of the Vienna Boys' Choir as well as of members of the Vienna State Opera Chorus and Orchestra. They can be heard every Sunday at High Mass at the Imperial Chapel... They can also be heard at the Vienna State Opera, at the Salzburg Festival, and at their own festive concerts – with a repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the Present Day.
